Be Cool. Be Safe. How to Handle Extreme Heat
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids - even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. One quart of water per hour is recommended if working in heat.
Stay indoors. If you must be outside, find shade and take frequent breaks.
Avoid strenuous or high-energy activities, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Watch for signs of heat illness, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical attention.
Never leave a child or pet alone in an enclosed vehicle. Always double check the back seat and make sure your children aren’t still in the car before leaving.
Check on the well-being of family, friends and neighbors, especially those who don’t have air conditioning.
Check on pets frequently to ensure they aren’t suffering from the heat.
Prepare for a possible power outage. Re-stock your family’s emergency supply kit. If a member of your household depends on life support or needs other medical equipment, have an emergency plan in place, including a backup power supply.
Know What to Expect
Extreme heat can be life threatening.
HEAT STORM - Temperatures exceed 100°F over a large area for 3 days in a row.
HEAT WAVE - More than 48 hours of high heat (90°F+) and high humidity (80% and up) are expected.
Recognize the Warning Signs
HEAT CRAMPS are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion.
HEAT EXHAUSTION occurs from heavy sweating in a warm, humid place. The sweat does not evaporate and the body does not cool properly.
If left unchecked, HEAT EXHAUSTION can lead to HEAT STROKE.
HEAT STROKE is life-threatening. The body’s temperature control system stops working.
If the body is not cooled quickly, HEAT STROKE can lead to BRAIN DAMAGE or DEATH.
