Remain in your vehicle. The powerline may be live and can be carrying power that can electrify the ground.

Notify bystanders that you have been in an accident and honk your horn. Note: Bystanders should never approach downed lines and should remain at least 10 yards away from a downed line, that’s the length of a school bus.\n

Immediately, call 911 and then PG&E at 1 (800) 743-5000.

If you must exit your vehicle due to an emergency, such as fumes or a fire, please follow these steps:

Open your car door and stand firmly at the edge of your vehicle. You do not want to place your foot on the ground to avoid voltage.

Cross your arms and jump away from the vehicle with your feet together onto the ground, and make sure not to touch the body of your car.

Note: Before exiting your vehicle remove loose items of clothing.

Make sure to shuffle-step yourself away from your vehicle (keeping your feet always touching and your heel never passing your toes). Do this for at least 30 feet on dry ground and 60 feet on wet ground.

Space Heaters

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, space heaters are responsible for more than 25,000 residential fires every year, resulting in more than 300 deaths.

Never leave a space heater unattended or alone with young children and pets. In addition to the threat of fire, space heaters are also hot and can burn children and pets.
Place space heaters on level, hard, nonflammable surfaces. DON'T place a gas fueled space heater on a rug or carpet.
NEVER put objects on a space heater. DON'T use a space heater to dry shoes or clothes.

Carbon Monoxide

$\"Carbon$

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is produced from burning fuel. It can be fatal when allowed to build up indoors.

Protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning by installing carbon monoxide detectors in your home. They should be placed near sleeping areas to wake you if an emergency occurs while you’re asleep. As is the case with your smoke detector, you should replace the batteries every six months.

A HELPFUL REMINDER

As of 2011, all California single-family homes are required to have carbon monoxide detectors

\nCheck that fuel-burning appliances — such as gas furnaces, stoves and water heaters — are installed properly and are well-maintained as they can produce high levels of carbon monoxide.
\nNEVER use cooking devices, such as ovens or stoves, to heat your home. Also don’t use generators, propane heaters, barbecues or charcoal indoors as they generate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Fireplaces

$\"Fireplace\"$

While a cozy fireplace can be appealing on a cold night, it can also be a hazard if not used properly. Familiarize yourself with the appropriate safety procedures before attempting to start a fire.

\nKeep flammable materials away from fireplaces and put a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace opening to prevent embers or sparks from exiting. Never leave a fire burning when you go to sleep.
\nSupervise small children while a fireplace is in use.
\nMake sure the flue is open so that the smoke and gasses from the fire vent properly. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned every year.

If you have a car, be sure to fill the tank as gas stations may be closed during an emergency or power outage. If you own an electric vehicle, make sure you have enough charge to make it to a charging station outside of your immediate area.

Keep bills and cash on hand (preferably in small bills) in case ATMs are unavailable.

How to Protect Yourself and Others During a Power Outage

Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Use coolers with ice if necessary. Monitor temperatures with a thermometer.

Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment or electronics.

Power may return with momentary \"surges\" or \"spikes\" that may cause damage.

Use food supplies that do not require refrigeration.

$\"Canned$

Use alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or power-dependent medical devices.

Go to a community location with power when heat or cold is extreme (if it is safe to do so).

Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

$\"Generator$

Generators, camp stoves or charcoal grills should always be used outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows. Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home.

How to Be Safe After a Power Outage

When in doubt, throw it out.

$\"Refrigerated$

Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture.

If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medication that should be refrigerated (unless the drug's label says otherwise).

If a life depends on refrigerated drugs, consult a doctor or pharmacist and use medicine only until a new supply is available.

Public Safety Power Shutoff

In order to keep communities safe, PG&E may need to turn off power when extreme weather or wildfire conditions are forecast.

Pack an emergency supply kit with nonperishable food, one gallon of water per person per day, medications, flashlights, and batteries.

Fully charge your mobile phone and consider adding a battery-powered portabe charger to your emergency kit to extend the battery life of your phone.

Practice opening and closing your garage door manually.

Keep bills and cash on hand (preferably in small bills) in case ATMs are unavailable.

How to Protect Yourself and Others During a Power Outage

Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Use coolers with ice if necessary. Monitor temperatures with a thermometer.

Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment or electronics.

Power may return with momentary \"surges\" or \"spikes\" that may cause damage.

Use food supplies that do not require refrigeration.

Use alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or power-dependent medical devices.

Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

How to Be Safe After a Power Outage

Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture.

If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medication that should be refrigerated (unless the drug's label says otherwise).

If a life depends on refrigerated drugs, consult a doctor or pharmacist and use medicine only until a new supply is available.

Power outages may be serious for people who use electricity and battery-dependent assistive technology and medical devices. These include customers who use respirators or ventilators, power wheelchairs, oxygen, or home dialysis machines.

Power outages may also be serious for customers who rely on medication that requires refrigeration.

Write down emergency phone numbers and keep them handy
Identify a backup location where you can go if necessary
Consider a safe backup power source, such as an electric generator or uninterruptible power supply
Regularly check that your backup or alternative power source is working properly

Label your equipment with your name, contact information, and clear instructions how to operate the equipment

Public Safety Power Shutoff and Medical Baseline Customers

In the interest of safety, PG&E may need to turn off power to communities served by electric lines in or running through high fire-threat areas when gusty winds and dry conditions, combined with a heightened fire risk, threaten a portion of the electric system. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

During a Public Safety Power Shutoff, ALL customers serviced by an affected power line will have their power shut off. This includes Medical Baseline customers.

The Medical Baseline Program, also known as Medical Baseline Allowance, is an assistance program for residential customers who have special energy needs due to qualifying medical conditions. In addition to being eligible for a lower rate on your monthly energy bill, Medical Baseline Program customers receive extra notifications in advance of a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

Though weather conditions can change quickly, PG&E will aim to provide advance notifications for potentially affected customers beginning 48 hours before the power is turned off. Additional outreach to Medical Baseline customers may include extra phone calls or a door knock to ensure that they are aware that a Public Safety Power Shutoff is going to occur so they can make the necessary preparations to stay safe.

Remain in your vehicle. The powerline may be live and can be carrying power that can electrify the ground.

Notify bystanders that you have been in an accident and honk your horn. Note: Bystanders should never approach downed lines and should remain at least 10 yards away from a downed line, that’s the length of a school bus.\n

Immediately, call 911 and then PG&E at 1 (800) 743-5000.

If you must exit your vehicle due to an emergency, such as fumes or a fire, please follow these steps:

Open your car door and stand firmly at the edge of your vehicle. You do not want to place your foot on the ground to avoid voltage.

Cross your arms and jump away from the vehicle with your feet together onto the ground, and make sure not to touch the body of your car.

Note: Before exiting your vehicle remove loose items of clothing.

Make sure to shuffle-step yourself away from your vehicle (keeping your feet always touching and your heel never passing your toes). Do this for at least 30 feet on dry ground and 60 feet on wet ground.
