According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, space heaters are responsible for more than 25,000 residential fires every year, resulting in more than 300 deaths.

Never leave a space heater unattended or alone with young children and pets. In addition to the threat of fire, space heaters are also hot and can burn children and pets.
Place space heaters on level, hard, nonflammable surfaces. DON'T place a gas fueled space heater on a rug or carpet.
NEVER put objects on a space heater. DON'T use a space heater to dry shoes or clothes.

Carbon Monoxide

$\"Carbon$

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is produced from burning fuel. It can be fatal when allowed to build up indoors.

Protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning by installing carbon monoxide detectors in your home. They should be placed near sleeping areas to wake you if an emergency occurs while you’re asleep. As is the case with your smoke detector, you should replace the batteries every six months.

A HELPFUL REMINDER

As of 2011, all California single-family homes are required to have carbon monoxide detectors

\nCheck that fuel-burning appliances — such as gas furnaces, stoves and water heaters — are installed properly and are well-maintained as they can produce high levels of carbon monoxide.
\nNEVER use cooking devices, such as ovens or stoves, to heat your home. Also don’t use generators, propane heaters, barbecues or charcoal indoors as they generate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Fireplaces

$\"Fireplace\"$

While a cozy fireplace can be appealing on a cold night, it can also be a hazard if not used properly. Familiarize yourself with the appropriate safety procedures before attempting to start a fire.

\nKeep flammable materials away from fireplaces and put a glass or metal screen in front of the fireplace opening to prevent embers or sparks from exiting. Never leave a fire burning when you go to sleep.
\nSupervise small children while a fireplace is in use.
\nMake sure the flue is open so that the smoke and gasses from the fire vent properly. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned every year.

NOTE: Do not burn wood on days when a Spare the Air Alert is in effect. To learn if a Spare the Air Day is in effect, visit sparetheair.org.

These devices should be tested twice a year, batteries replaced if necessary, and expiration dates adhered to.
Have a qualified professional routinely maintain and inspect all heating systems and any fuel-burning appliances annually to ensure they are in good working condition.
When using the fireplace to stay warm, make sure the flue is open so venting can occur safely through the chimney and never use cooking devices such as ovens or stoves for home heating purposes.
Never run a vehicle or use unvented fuel-burning equipment in an enclosed space.

Keeping Your Home Safe This Holiday Season

We all love a pumpkin spiced candle or a holiday decoration but with these tips you can also protect your home from a fire.

Examine water levels daily if you have a live tree, and unplug any lights on the tree at night or when you have left your home.
Keep candles away from flammable materials (at least 1 foot) like trees or other decorations. Be sure to blow out candles and turn off lights when you leave your home or you go to sleep.
Be mindful when stringing lights and other decorations outside and stay at least 10 feet away from powerlines. Be sure to also inspect extension cords and light strings before hanging them to make sure they are not damaged or faulty.
Make sure that chimneys are cleaned and inspected.
Check fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to serious illness and even death.

Three Ways to Protect Youself from a Gas Leak

Gas leaks happen, and they can pose a serious fire threat to your home. Here's how you can keep yourself safe if you suspect a gas leak:

As the threat of wildfires in California continues to grow, it is important that we all take steps to protect our homes and businesses. California law requires 100 feet of defensible space around your home (or to the property line).

What should I do during a power outage if I rely on an electric or battery-dependent medical device?

Power outages may be serious for people who use electricity and battery-dependent assistive technology and medical devices. These include customers who use respirators or ventilators, power wheelchairs, oxygen, or home dialysis machines.

Power outages may also be serious for customers who rely on medication that requires refrigeration.

Write down emergency phone numbers and keep them handy
Identify a backup location where you can go if necessary
Consider a safe backup power source, such as an electric generator or uninterruptible power supply
Regularly check that your backup or alternative power source is working properly
Teach everyone you might contact for help how to operate your equipment and backup systems
Label your equipment with your name, contact information, and clear instructions how to operate the equipment

Public Safety Power Shutoff and Medical Baseline Customers

In the interest of safety, PG&E may need to turn off power to communities served by electric lines in or running through high fire-threat areas when gusty winds and dry conditions, combined with a heightened fire risk, threaten a portion of the electric system. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

During a Public Safety Power Shutoff, ALL customers serviced by an affected power line will have their power shut off. This includes Medical Baseline customers.

The Medical Baseline Program, also known as Medical Baseline Allowance, is an assistance program for residential customers who have special energy needs due to qualifying medical conditions. In addition to being eligible for a lower rate on your monthly energy bill, Medical Baseline Program customers receive extra notifications in advance of a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

Though weather conditions can change quickly, PG&E will aim to provide advance notifications for potentially affected customers beginning 48 hours before the power is turned off.
